Frequently Asked Questions
..and other information about creating & managing your own secure private discussion & trading network.
Welcome to your Local24Seven business network building system:
* advanced supplier prequalification. mapping and e-procurement services are included in the buyer package only.
Q: Who provides L247?
A: Business Community CLG - a not-for-profit organisation that is dedicated to supporting local businesses and communities. The network is funded entirely by sponsors and buyers who pay a small charge to use the system.
Q: In what sense is my network private?
A: Every account has a "shop window" (apart from members of the public who remain anonymous unless they choose to share their details) When members create their shop window (and manage via the "Update" menus) they determine who can "see" them on the system by selecting whether they serve the commercial, domestic or both markets and by choosing the sectors and subsectors they wish to interract with. Members also choose who to invite into their private network and control who can participate in discussions, be asked to quote etc.
Q: If the network is for local businesses, what do I do if I have national contacts?
A: All business users can "Join other networks in the family" to instantly connect into geographically adjacent host networks. Business Support/Membership organisations and Buyers with a national presence should create their account in their home host and contact firstname.lastname@example.org to have their network expanded appropriately so that they can build multiple supplier networks across the UK.
Q: Why can the network not be funded by charging a small registration fee?
A: It could, but one of the key principles of Business Community CLG is to be inclusive and to remove all barriers to entry. Simply put, if we can help local businesses improve and thrive it will create jobs and apprenticeships, give local people more disposable income and provide a boost to the local economy as a whole.
Q: What are the benefits of joining?
A: Local24Seven has been carefully designed to provide a wide range of benefits for every “user group”. The benefits differ for each group and the list of benefits will grow as we are a not-for-profit organisation and so any “profit” we make will be re-invested to improve services. Every user can build their own business or social network and go beyond conventional social media networking by using the trading tools, controlling their own discussions and membership of their private network.
Q: Who can join L247?
A: Anyone and hopefully, everyone. It’s for the whole community and the more local people and businesses that join and use the system, the more free services will become available. We especially welcome commercial procurers that want to find local suppliers and business support organisations that can help our local businesses become more successful.
Q: If we allow anyone to join, how do we make sure that standards are maintained?
A: The whole idea is to be inclusive and if required, to help businesses improve the quality of their service - we can’t support them if we exclude them. At the same time, people and other businesses who want to trade with them need to see what they’re about, so everyone has access to the map search which will allow you to see every firm’s “shop window”. The shop window includes their accreditations, memberships of trade and professional bodies, contact details and service/product information so you can decide whether you wish to trade with them or not. L247 will provide you with as much information as possible to make that decision, but ultimately it’s your decision. More specialised business information can be made available to commercial buyers and suppliers to support the engagement of local suppliers in supply chains. Have a look at the Terms and Conditions of membership for more information on this topic.
Q: Why doesn’t L247 use a “customer rating” system to score businesses?
A: Because they are very unreliable and incredibly costly to police. There are so many reports of unscrupulous businesses giving themselves/getting their friends to give fantastic reviews to boost their score – some even give competitors poor reviews to bring down their average score. It’s a minefield and adds little or no value.
Q: Some network buyers expect businesses to have accreditations, policies etc. Doesn’t this exclude businesses that haven’t got them?
A: It’s quite understandable that buyers expect appropriate standards. They need to know that local suppliers meet the required legal standards, have the ability to deliver what is asked of them and understand how to work with that particular buyer organisation. Buyers deal with lots of businesses - accreditations and standards are an indicator that local businesses are up to scratch. That’s why network members have access to the whole range of business support options to help them achieve success as a business and get the local and national accreditations they may need to grow. Every supplier has the option to complete online PQQs and upload the supporting documentation - which will only be visible to network buyers - not their competitors.
